Surrounded by coastal and rural landscapes, Rockhampton truly is the definition of the outback meeting the reef. HistoryRockhampton was founded in 1855 and its name was inspired by the rocks in the Fitroy River creating a feature through the middle of the city. Rockhampton grew quickly thanks to the gold discoveries in the surrounding region during the goldrush period, and went on to become a major mining area as it remains today. Mining, farming/grazing, and beef production are the major primary industries and of course Rockhampton is known as the beef capital of Australia (you can't miss the numerous bull statues throughout the city). Take a walk along the Quay St riverbank and admire the heritage listed "historic streetscape". Rockhampton's Heritage Village provides an amazing showcase of the areas history.
